As a bee seeks nectar
from all kinds of flowers,
seek teachings everywhere.

Like a deer that finds a quiet place to graze,
seek seclusion to digest all you have gathered.

Like a lion, live completely free of all fear.
And, finally, like a madman, beyond all limits,
go wherever you please.

- A Tantra of Dzogchen

"By no means does rock climbing get anyone rich. It's more of a rich life."  --Sonnie Trotter

I've made this recipe with the star anise--Lentil Soup With Fennel and Star Anise--but found it a little hot on the palate for spring, although a little homemade yogurt on the side remedied that. Tonight, I'm going to try substituting fennel seed (in addition to the fennel bulb that's called for) and see how it goes.

Also, this week the grocery store was out of leeks, so I'm going to see if I can get away with endive.

ETA: stick to the star anise.

I pulled off a nice redpoint of Dream Catcher* today.  I need to remember to love my utter and complete inability to multitask: The corollary is that I can micro-focus.

Time seemed to slow down while I was leading today.  I was surprisingly cool, calm, and commited.  All the holds seemed magnified in my field of vision--even the tiny ones.  I linked all the delicate sequences just right.  And if it came down to it, I was ready to take the fall, no blubbering, no whining.

In short, I'm proud.

*The quartzite isn't nearly as reddish as that picture makes it out.  It's more of a pinkish-grey.  Blame the blazing late afternoon sun.

I wouldn't blame anyone for not liking it, but personally, I'm a little in love with the art of Rex Ray right now.

Title: Lack of Crowds
Word Count: ~550
Prompt: drowning
Summary: Sometimes being late for class means getting the seat you wanted anyway.

People are scuffling out of their seats, making beelines for the exits.  We’ve just been dismissed for our usual mid-lecture break.  I’m scribbling the last of my notes when her voice prods my attention off the page.  Don’t ask me how the aisle seat next to her was still free when I sliced into class a couple minutes late, hair still wet as I dropped my paper into the box.

“Did you surf this morning, Ian?”

Wednesday, after 11 hours and approximately 2,000 feet of climbing, we topped out on the Stawamus Chief.  The Chief is located about an hour north of Vancouver along the panoramic Sea to Sky highway.

Wednesday also happened to be our wedding anniversary.

I'm ready for gladiator style footwear to bite the dust.

I'm barely 5'4", yeah, so I don't need lots of straps around my ankles to make me look even shorter than I am.  Also, I've spent the last twenty years skiing, rock climbing, trail running, and playing every foot-torturing sport imaginable.  Ballet flats suit me just fine because they hide my brutalized, calloused, leather-stained toes.

...So can we move on?

*This post brought to you by the abundance of marketing junk from various catalog companies clogging my e-mail inbox this morning.

It's probably a good thing that I've never read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  Because anytime I go see a movie based on a book, I'm sorely disappointed.

Last night I went to see the new swashbuckling version of Sherlock Holmes.  Thoughts... )

I'm putting together my portfolio, so I'm delving through old assignments.

I rec'd a few fics* last week, as some of you may know by now.  If I weren't playing Monday morning catch-up, I'd give details.  Stories take a long time to be written and more people should know about the favorites so they can be thoroughly enjoyed!

*including my own, ha!

I'm going to climb The Elephant's Perch this weekend.

WAHOOOOOOO!

Psyched for cooler temps.  Psyched for the ferry ride.

I busted out of town for a weekend of climbing with my best friend.  We just rolled back into town around midnight last night.  The weekend was divine...

Starting with the serendipitous weather... )
